Q: In your walk with Christ what have you concluded is the proper means of tithing?
As we look into the Word of God, we find much evidence that tithing is a command for every child of God. This, like every other command of God, is not optional. In Malachi 3:8-10, God tells us that we rob Him when we refuse to give our tithes. “Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now here with, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.”
This passage of scripture tells us much concerning the subject of tithing. First, we find that we are guilty of robbing God when we do not tithe. We are guilty of disobedience to God’s command. We bring a curse from God upon us when we rob Him. Secondly, God tells us of the place He has chosen for us to bring to Him our tithes. This is the local church which He instituted on the shores of Galilee when Jesus called the disciples together, “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse....” God’s plan of building a church is through soul-winning. His plan of supporting a church is through tithes and offerings. Our tithes allow a church to reach into more areas with the gospel message of Jesus Christ, thereby winning more people to Christ. Thirdly, the Lord promises us a blessing if we willingly give our tithes to Him.
Now you may ask, what is a tithe? The Lord has told us in Genesis 28:22 the answer to this question when Jacob said, “....and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.” A tenth should come from the top, before anything else is taken out. Proverbs 3:9 says, “Honor the Lord with thy substance, and with the first-fruits of all thine increase.” Let me emphasize the importance of obeying the command of tithing. The Lord has always used men in doing His work. He uses our tithes and offering in financing His work. Do not, however, mistake the offerings as being the tithe. An offering is any gift given above the amount of tithes.
The Bible plainly teaches that where your money is, that is where your love and support will also be. If you want to get your heart into God’s work, put your money into it. “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also”, Matthew 6:21.
God loves a cheerful giver. In II Corinthians 9:6-8 the Lord tells us, “He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap bountifully. Every man according as he purposes in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work.” God will not let you go in need if you cheerfully give to Him His tithe. He is able to meet your every need. He is God! You cannot out give God! If you give liberally and willingly, then you will receive liberally. How can this be? How can giving money away produce money? Take notice to whom you are giving the money. You give to God, the creator of the universe, the sustainer of all life. Even though God has chosen the local church to be the storehouse in which we bring our tithes and offerings, we are still giving to God! It is not hard for God to take care of us when we give to Him, for nothing is impossible with God.
The world does not understand tithing. They do not understand and think it foolish for a man to give away a tenth of everything he earns, “The foolishness of God is wiser than men....God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise,”
I Corinthians 1:25-27.
Not only should we tithe our money, but also our time and talents as well. Would you like to have more time? Then give your time to God and He will guide you in the schedule of your time. It will seem that hours will stretch. Give your talents to God and they will blossom and develop to their highest potential. God promises in Luke 6:38, “Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.” Claim the promises God gives and put into honest practice this command of tithing and see God’s hand work in your life. Are you going to keep on depending upon your own weak self to provide your needs? Give God a chance. The God that saved you from Hell, that created all things, is more than able to take care of His children. He wants you to prove Him, “....Prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts.....”, Malachi 3:10.
Someone may ask, “Do I tithe off the gross or the net of my income?” Recently, I heard this answered this way. It depends on if you want “gross'” blessings or “net” blessings”! Good answer!
